Weird Food Fest Draw Thrill-Seeking Gourmets

Do the offerings at your neighborhood eatery fail to inspire your appetite?
Are your taste buds tired of the familiar fare at the local supermarket?
It may be time to hit the road and sample the wild side of the menu.
Weird food festivals have become de rigueur throughout the culinary world, drawing adventurous gourmands from around the globe.
First stop on any exotic food road trip would probably be the Roadkill Cook-Off in Marlinton, West Virginia.
You never know exactly what will be on the menu until it has the misfortune to trot, crawl or slither into the path of an oncoming car.

That's right; this weird food festival serves up animals commonly found dead on the side of a highway.

It doesn't have to be actual roadkill, however.
Crowd favorites include "pothole possum stew," "smeared hog with groundhog gravy," and barbecued rattlesnake.
"Judges will deduct points for every chipped tooth resulting from gravel not removed from the roadkill," warns the festival's official rules.
"All judges have been tested for cast-iron stomachs and have sworn under oath to have no vegetarian tendencies."
If you prefer your meat a bit more processed, you might jet off to Honolulu, Hawaii for the annual Waikiki Spam Jam.
This festival is dedicated to the wonders of the canned mystery meat, which Hawaiians consume more of per capita than anywhere else.
The locals turn the pinkish substance into everything from Spam fried rice to "guava mango spam sliders."
"I think people are amused by the whole idea because it is pretty different," said Barbara Campbell, one of the founders of the festival. "Like, why would you celebrate Spam?"
Vampires would be wise to avoid Gilroy, California in July. That's when the city celebrates its annual Garlic Festival, dedicated to the pungent bulb and famed repellent of bloodsuckers.
Among the exotic garlic-flavored treats on offer is garlic ice cream.
Even die-hard garlic lovers describe it as "an acquired taste."
