Will South Africa Feel the World Cup Economic Bounce?

The World Cup officially kicked off in South Africa Saturday with the host country hoping to not only reap football glory, but economic gold as well.
Does hosting what is arguably one of the world's largest sporting competitions actually translate into long-term fiscal gains?
The answer depends largely on where one looks.
In the case of Japan, which hosted the 2002 World Cup with neighboring Korea, the tournament has turned into an economic drag as mounting maintenance costs for the venues built or renovated for the competition outweighed the revenues they bring in.
Each loses between $2 million and $6 million a year, a burden which ends up falling on the shoulders of the Japanese taxpayer.
During the 2006 World Cup, host Germany raked in $2.6 billion in sales from food, drink and memorabilia.

However, when the fans went home, the economic gains went with them.

For some countries, the games can boost the economy by instilling a positive feeling among consumers.
In France, the 1998 World Cup is credited with helping lift the country out of an economic malaise.
"What the World Cup did was increase maybe consumer confidence and gave that sort of wave of euphoria which leads to stronger consumer spending," said Alexander Law, chief economist at the economic analysis firm Xerfi.
"But it was not the main factor behind the recovery for the French economy."
Many observers are anxious to see what impact if any the World Cup will have on South Africa's struggling post-apartheid economy.
The 2010 World Cup is expected to bring $12 billion, while the cost of the games has ballooned to $3.9 billion.
The potential to raise South Africa's profile on the world stage, however, is priceless.
