South Korean Military Exercises Ratchet Up Tensions in Yellow Sea

In a move being labeled antagonistic by South Korea's regional rivals, the Asian nation began major military exercises in the Yellow Sea Thursday.
The antisubmarine drills were the largest display of force in the area since the alleged March sinking of a South Korean warship by a North Korean sub that claimed the lives of 46 sailors.
The exercises took place over the span of five days and involved more than 4,500 personnel from all four branches of South Korea's military.
Both domestic and international investigations into the causes of the sinking of the corvette Cheonan concluded that the ship was torpedoed by a North Korean submarine.
Seoul has since demanded an apology, while Pyongyang has steadfastly denied any involvement in the incident.
The North's state-run media did not mince words in its condemnation of the exercises, threatening "strong physical retaliation" for what it characterized as the South's "undisguised military intrusion."

"The army and the people of the DPRK are closely watching every move of [South Korean President] Lee Myung-bak's group of traitors," said a statement issued by the Secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea.

"And if the puppet warmongers dare ignite a war, [we] will mercilessly destroy the provokers and their stronghold by mobilizing most powerful war tactics and offensive means beyond imagination."
Pyongyang's closest ally, China, which has refused to join the international chorus condemning North Korea's alleged role in the Cheonan incident, carried out military drills of its own along its Yellow Sea coast.
Despite North Korea's tough rhetoric, some military and political experts doubt the North would risk an attack on its better equipped and trained rival to the south.
"The North Koreans have to rely on asymmetric capabilities," said Dan Pinkston of the International Crisis Group. "In a straight-up fight they are not that capable."
