Nearly 200 Airline Pilots in China Faked Flight Experience

Rising personal incomes, an increase in recreational travel and shortages of qualified pilots have created a deadly combination in China.
According to aviation officials in the country, nearly 200 commercial pilots working in the airline industry had falsified their previous flight experience.
The revelation comes on the heels of one of China's worst airline accidents in six years, and underlines the consequences of a boom in travel coupled with a limited pool of trained flight personnel.
In August, a Shenzhen Airlines flight crashed in northeastern China, killing 42 people and injuring another 54.
Results of an investigation into the cause of the crash have yet to be released.
Soon after the crash, the Shanghai-based China Business News broke a story exposing the false flying records of many pilots.

Aviation officials have since launched their own investigation into pilot qualifications, and those implicated have either had their licenses revoked or have been ordered to take additional flight training, according to China's state-run media.

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, the investigation is part of a thorough safety overhaul of the country's aviation industry.
According to one pilot identified only as by his family name Xu, falsified flight records have been common knowledge among his colleagues.
"The rapid expansion of China's civil aviation requires more commercial pilots, and the gap was usually filled up by those pilots who drove military aircraft, but transferred to commercial flights," Xu told China Daily.
"These pilots were very likely to falsify their flying history in the military, since it is hard to track and verify.
By doing this, they can get promoted more quickly in flying commercial airplanes," Xu said.
"The airline companies only keep half an eye on this, since they are happy to see more pilots certified by the administrative agency."
