Child Labor Charges Threaten to Derail Commonwealth Games

A human rights activist has accused the New Delhi hosts of the Commonwealth Games of using child labor in preparation for the event.
It is one more in a growing list of controversies Indian officials are struggling to deal with ahead of the competition.
Several participating nations are threatening to pull out of the sporting event between members of the Commonwealth, an association of sovereign former members of the British Empire.
Criticism has targeted unsafe venues, poor sanitation at game sites and the athletes' village, and most recently, the use of child and forced labor in the construction of facilities for the event.
"I reliably documented in just a few days 32 cases of forced labor and 14 cases of child labor all for construction related to the Commonwealth Games," said Harvard fellow and human trafficking expert Siddharth Kara in an interview with CNN.
"The children I saw were the ones where I felt I had documented child labor -- where children were working, picking up hammers, banging stones, paving entryways and planting grass alongside roadways to beautify them, hours and hours at a time," Kara said.

"I documented children aged seven, eight, nine, ten years old working alongside their families in this mad rush to get the construction done."

Kara described the conditions under which many of the children worked as "subhuman."
"They live in the dirt, they go to the toilet behind bushes and trees, which is why they found human excrement in the athletes' village a few days ago," he said.
Kara said he spent several days documenting individual cases to be sure the children were not just accompanying their parents to the work site.
Several members of the Commonwealth, including England, Scotland and Wales, had threatened to pull out of the competition over safety and sanitation concerns.
A handful of individual athletes have already decided not to compete.
A last-minute push to complete venues and bring them up to standard seemed to resolve initial concerns until the revelations about child labor broke in the international media.
