Design Competition Imagines Future Moon Base for Humanity

Design competitions frequently feature some out-of-this-world concepts, but that was just the idea behind a recent contest that asked participants to imagine a moon base for humans that would be habitable by the year 2069.
The competition was sponsored by non-profit urban planning group SHIFTboston.
Participants managed to come up with several wildly creative ideas and graphic illustrations that depicted everything from lunar sports stadiums to Moon cemeteries.
Imagining future colonies in space is nothing new.
Such flights of fancy have been fodder for science fiction literature and films for more than a century.
What is new about SHIFTboston's Moon Capital 2010 is it unites two disciplines that are often at odds, namely architecture and engineering.

"The most important thing was bringing together two completely different industries," said Kim Poliquin, executive director and founder of SHIFTboston.

"Architecture is changing as our society and technology changes.
This shows how architecture could become part of the astronautics industry."
Entertaining though they were, several design concepts suggested innovative solutions to the problems humans would face when colonizing other worlds.
Organizers said that many ideas stem from very real problems humans face now on their home planet, such as shrinking resources and global hunger.
The winning entry was submitted by designer Bryna Andersen.
The designer imagines a Moon colony encircling a giant dish antenna that would collect solar energy and beam it back to Earth.
"The tension between what is mostly ideal or perhaps impossible and what is logical and clearly achievable is necessary to arrive at passionate and creative solutions," said contest judge Madhu Thangavelu, a University of Southern California space systems design professor.
"(The entries) are mostly exercises in vision and architecture and wholly meant to inform engineers where humanity's priorities lie with respect to human space activity on the Moon."
