29 Perish in New Zealand Mine Accident

New Zealanders mourned the deaths of all 29 miners trapped below the earth for over a week following an explosion and collapse at the country's Pike River coal mine.
Word of the fatalities came after a second explosion rocked the mine Wednesday, November 24, while rescuers worked feverishly to reach the stranded workers.
"There was another massive explosion underground, and based on that explosion, no one survived," said Gary Knowles, superintendent of the Tasman Police Command during a press conference. "We're now going to recovery mode."
Knowles, who was at the mine and witnessed the second explosion Wednesday, described the scene to reporters.
"The blast was horrific, just as severe as the first blast," he said, adding that it was too early to speculate on its cause.
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said he like many had hoped for a miracle during the rescue operation.

"This is a national tragedy," he said, "a tragedy for the men's families, for their workmates and friends, for their community and our nation.

New Zealand is a small country -- a country where we are our brother's keeper.
So to lose this many brothers at once strikes an agonizing blow."
Key offered his condolences to members of the miner's families.
"To all those who lost their loved one in the Pike River mine, let me say this: New Zealand stands shoulder to shoulder with you," the prime minister said.
"Though we cannot possibly feel this pain as you do, we have you in our hearts and our thoughts."
Though investigations into the cause of the second blast continue, several experts say the most likely cause was a buildup of combustible gas that was somehow ignited.
Air released from drilling in the mine would have contained high levels of carbon monoxide and methane.
The prime minister said he expects there to be a number of inquiries into the tragedy.
