WikiLeaks Editor Assange Freed on Bail

WikiLeaks editor Julian Assange emerged from London's High Court a free man after posting bail Thursday.
It was nine days after his arrest for questioning in connection to alleged sex crimes in Sweden.
Assange told reporters that his time in solitary confinement gave him an opportunity "to reflect on the condition of those people around the world also in solitary confinement ... in positions that are more difficult than those faced by me.
Those people ... also need your attention and support."
He thanked the public, the media, his lawyers, and the British justice system for his release, adding, "If justice is not always an outcome, at least it is not dead yet."
The controversial 39-year-old online editor turned himself in to London police last week.

Though he rose to infamy by releasing hundreds of classified documents on his WikiLeaks Web site, embarrassing the U.S. government and its allies in the process, Swedish prosecutors sought Assange's extradition to question him about sex charges unrelated to WikiLeaks.

Assange was originally granted bail on Tuesday, but lawyers representing Sweden immediately appealed.
That kept Assange behind bars until the High Court judge decided on the Swedish appeal, which Assange won Thursday.
"I had faith that the British justice system would do the right thing ... and that faith has been confirmed," said Assange's mother, Christine, outside the court.
She added that she could "not wait" to see him "and to hold him close."
Assange was ordered to remain at the mansion of a supporter outside London, report to the police daily and wear an electronic monitor to track his location.
The judge ruled that he must also put up about US$310,000 in bail money, plus two sureties of approximately US$31,000 each.
Judge Duncan Ouseley said there was no concrete evidence leading him to believe Assange would abscond and that he did not regard the WikiLeaks editor as a fugitive.
