Deadly Quake Rattles New Zealand

The search for survivors continued late last week after a powerful earthquake struck downtown Christchurch, New Zealand.
The 6.3 magnitude temblor killed dozens of people, destroyed buildings and left others trapped beneath piles of rubble.
Prime Minister John Key reported that at least 75 people were confirmed dead, and hundreds remain missing.
The death toll was expected to rise, and many bodies had yet to be identified.
Among the missing late last week were 10 Japanese exchange students.
They were believed to be trapped under a collapsed building at King's Education College.

During a press briefing last Wednesday, Key told reporters that he was urging New Zealand's parliament to declare a state of emergency for the entire country.

The quake struck the city during Tuesday's lunchtime. Rescue workers rushed to the scene and began searching for survivors, some of whom were trapped beneath the fallen debris for hours.
Meanwhile, dazed and often bleeding quake victims staggered through the rubble-strewn streets.
The quake collapsed buildings onto buses, ripped up streets, toppled a church spire and knocked out power for much of the city.
Rescue efforts continued into the night under the glow of floodlights as workers pulled "a large number of people" from collapsed buildings, according to a police department statement posted online Wednesday.
According to the statement, "significant numbers of people" remained trapped inside two downtown buildings that "suffered major collapse."
"Police are also aware of there being a number of deceased people in both buildings," the statement said.
"This is just heartbreaking," Key said during a trip to survey the damage. "This may be New Zealand's darkest day."
