China Pushes for More Local Auto Brands

The Shanghai Auto Show is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of Chinese over the course of its run, but to those on the floor it feels like the masses all showed up at once.
Throngs of visitors stand gaping at the latest designs, which include an "eco-friendlier" GM Chevy Malibu, a more "masculine" VW Beetle and the "McCar."
The latter is described as motorcycle-meets-mini car.
The Shanghai show is running in conjunction with the New York Auto Show.
The main difference between the two is the number of people ready to buy their first car.
Three out of four Chinese car customers are first time buyers, according to auto industry analysts, and nearly all of them pay cash up front.

It should be no surprise that the world's carmakers are racing to get in on the action.

According to CNN correspondent Eunice Yoon, executives in China have been emphasizing the potential growth, while at the same time voicing their concerns about a recent trend.
GM, Ford, and PSA Peugeot Citroen have noticed a push by Chinese authorities to develop and promote indigenous brands.
Philippe Varin, the CEO of PSA Peugeot Citroen, said government pressure made its way into the European carmaker's recent negotiations to expand in China.
The paramount issue for the Chinese government is to promote local brands.
"That is the reason why we have decided to have a local brand," he said at the unveiling of his company's DS5 model.
The climate for doing business in China is getting tougher for international businesses and the big carmakers are feeling heat.
Sill, in spite of the pressure, companies like GM and VW are highly successful there.
The reason is simple; Chinese people like to buy foreign branded cars.
Such is not the case for other industries, such as white goods, where Chinese players prevail.
Though international manufacturers stand to earn money off a Chinese brand, some foreign executives worry that new demand for localized cars could limit brand loyalty among Chinese consumers to foreign cars.
