Osama bin Laden Raid Yields Information on Future Plots

Intelligence taken from the lair of one the world's most wanted terrorists revealed plots to attack several cities in the United States.
Homeland security officials say the information comes from computer hard drives and other material gathered during last week's raid on Osama bin Laden's compound in northern Pakistan.
The al Qaeda leader and 9/11 mastermind was killed in the assault.
An alert issued Thursday was tied to rail security, said law enforcement authorities in the U.S.
It is the first new notice that can be linked to the early Monday raid on bin Laden's Abbottabad compound.
In February 2010, al Qaeda members discussed a plan to derail trains in the U.S. by placing obstructions on tracks over bridges.

The plan was to be put into action later this year to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

No specific city or rail system was mentioned in the notice.
"It is not surprising that we would find this kind of information in the home of the world's most wanted terrorist," one U.S. official told CNN.
Department of Homeland Security officials acknowledged that the notice went out to federal, state, local and tribal authorities.
Department spokesman Matt Chandler stressed that "this alleged al Qaeda plotting is based on initial reporting, which is often misleading or inaccurate and subject to change."
"We have no information of any imminent terrorist threat to the U.S. rail sector, but wanted to make our partners aware of the alleged plotting; it is unclear if any further planning has been conducted since February of last year," Chandler said.
Material gathered from the same compound also suggests that al Qaeda was particularly interested in striking Washington, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, according to the official.
He added that al Qaeda seems focused on hitting targets on significant dates like July 4, Christmas and the opening day of the United Nations.
The threats follow days after U.S. commandos were dropped by helicopter into a fortified housing compound 60 miles outside of the Pakistani capital.
There they killed bin Laden and four others, then took off with his body and numerous materials.
