New U.S. Ambassador Charms China By Buying His Own Coffee

The sight of the new U.S. ambassador to China attempting to purchase his own coffee at an airport in Seattle while handling his own carry-on bag has caused a stir in his adopted country.
A photo of former U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke was shot by a Chinese traveler on August 12 at a Starbucks coffee shop in the airport terminal.
Locke was seen without any security and shouldering his own backpack as he waited with his family.
The amateur paparazzi uploaded the picture from his iPhone to Chinese micro-blogging site, Sina Weibo.
From there, it was latched onto by an army of curious bloggers as well as China's mainstream media.
Two days later, the image was re-posted more than 40,000 times.

What shocked the Chinese was Locke's understated and low-key approach, a stark contrast to the tight security and privileged treatment enjoyed by public officials at most levels of Chinese society.

"He's carrying his own backpack," a stunned Beijing Times proclaimed. The government-run Beijing Legal News noted that Locke's family "look like ordinary travelers."
A Chinese blogger pointed out, "You people out of China might think this photo is too ordinary and can't see much out of it, but for Chinese it's shocking."
The author of the image said in a later post that Starbucks staff even refused Locke's attempts to exchange his discount coupon for a coffee, forcing him to pay with a credit card.
This prompted some bloggers to joke that the U.S. must really be suffering economically if its ambassador was forced to use such a voucher.
Others simply praised Locke for being the kind of official they crave.
"This (Locke) is the model government official figure Chinese citizens wish for because China doesn't have officials like this," one wrote.

Jon Huntsman, the departing U.S. ambassador to China, also won admirers in China for his laid-back style.

He often rode his bicycle around Beijing rather than use the official ambassadorial limousine.
