Steve Jobs Steps Down as Apple CEO

Steve Jobs has resigned his position as Apple CEO.
Former Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook will replace him, according to a statement by the company late last Wednesday.
Jobs plans to retain his position as Apple's chairman.
No mention was made by the company of Jobs' health when announcing his departure, however the Apple co-founder made mention of it in the letter of resignation he delivered to the company's board of directors on Wednesday.
The letter was later made public.
"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know.

Unfortunately, that day has come," wrote Jobs, who has been on medical leave since January.

Cook has been filling in as the company's leader.
The board went out of its way to laud Jobs, who not only founded the company, but reversed Apple's sagging fortunes in the late 90s and led it through one of its most prosperous and innovative eras.
Sales of Apple shares were briefly halted in after-hours trading while the company announced its leadership change.
Share prices shrank by five-percent when trading resumed.
"Steve's extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world's most innovative and valuable technology company," board member Art Levinson said.
"In his new role as chairman of the board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration."

Apple's fans made their way to Twitter and other social-media sites to mark and mourn the changing of the guard.

"The end of an era!" wrote one Twitter user, while another voiced the fears shared by many: "I pray it's not [because] of his health."

In January, Jobs announced a second medical leave of absence.

This came on the heels of a six-month sabbatical two years earlier during which he received a liver transplant.

During his most recent medical leave of absence, he continued to oversee Apple's major strategic decisions while Cook handled the day-to-day operations.
