Eastwood's Surprise RNC Speech Is Hit or Miss Depending on Who's Asked

Actor and director Clint Eastwood made the day of the GOP faithful at the Republican National Convention when he gave a speech Thursday night.
In the end, however, few could agree whether the aging star had laid out the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of American political affairs or had just gone Every Which Way but Loose.
(註:Good, the Bad and the Ugly《黃昏三鏢客》(1966 年)與 Every Which Way but Loose《永不低頭》(1978 年)均為克林.
The mostly adlibbed address was delivered to an "invisible" President Barack Obama sitting in an empty chair.
Eastwood, who played the iconic tough guy character Dirty Harry during his long career in Hollywood, said he cried when Obama was elected and cried even harder years later when millions were out of work.
"It's a national disgrace," Eastwood said.
"It may be time for someone else to come along and solve the problem."
At times, Eastwood sent the crowd into laughing fits when he pretended Obama was offering colorful objections.
"What do you want me to tell Romney?" Eastwood asked the empty chair.
"I can't tell him to do that to himself... you're getting as bad as Biden... of course we all know Biden is the intellect of the Democratic Party. Kind of a grin with a body behind it..."
While the speech seemed to go over well with delegates packed into Tampa Bay Times Forum, pundits from both sides of the political spectrum were less gentle with the veteran actor's performance.
"I feel bad for him," said Republican strategist Steve Schmidt.
"It was a mistake by the campaign to put him out there.
He's an 82-year-old man."
"Clint, my hero, is coming across as sad and pathetic," tweeted film critic Roger Ebert.
"He didn't need to do this to himself. It's unworthy of him."
Backstage, it was reported that stern-faced Romney aides winced at times in response to Eastwood's remarks.
After his speech, Romney's camp defended the actor.
"He's an American icon," Romney spokeswoman Gail Gitcho told CNN's Piers Morgan.
"You can't look at him through the same political lens that you would other politicians. He's Clint Eastwood."
