Some Food for Thought

NO.44

We all love baked goods. Throughout the world, there are a variety of breads and pastries sold in bakeries, and quite a few of them have a unique cultural history of their own.

Bagels

In the U.S., bagels are a popular breakfast food. Shaped like donuts, they are different from other bread products because they are boiled before they are baked. This gives them a dense, chewy consistency unlike other fluffier types of bread.

Bagels were originally an Eastern European creation, and they were brought to the U.S. by Jewish immigrants. As their popularity spread, bagels began to lose their ethnic identity. Today, they are something that almost everyone eats and are usually topped with an American creation from 1872—cream cheese.

Soft Pretzels

Similar in consistency to bagels, soft pretzels are usually thought of as a German invention because of their popularity in that country. However, it is believed that they were created by a seventh century Italian monk. Before baking, this monk shaped the dough so that it resembled crossed arms with the hands on the shoulders, the praying position of the time. The monk handed out his creation to children when they learned their prayers and named them pretiolas, which means “little rewards” in Italian. It was only much later that they became popular in Germany.
