Stone has always had a flair for exploring the more contentious chapters in the American story, from the Kennedy assassination to the Vietnam War to the Bush administration.
He is now in the process of filming a 10-part non-fiction series about little-known chapters in U.S. history for the Showtime network titled Oliver Stone's Secret History of America.
Stone won Oscars and critical praise in the 1980s for Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July, both about the Vietnam War.
His exhaustive exploration of the conspiracies that may or may not have surrounded the killing of John F. Kennedy in JFK met with criticism from some circles.
Topics Stone plans to cover in the new series include the Cold War, the decision that led to the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan during World War II and the changes in U.S. foreign policy since the fall of the Soviet Union.
"[This is] the deepest contribution I could ever make in film to my children and the next generation," Stone said. "I can only hope a change in our thinking will result."
