    wane 衰退
    wane 當動詞時，是「衰退；消退」的意思。相關的用法還有 wax and wane ，原本是用來指「月亮每個月的盈缺」，後來引申為「事／物的消長」。
    The company cited waning demand for its computer games as reason for its poor results.
    該公司以需求衰退為由來解釋其電玩銷售不佳的結果。
     
    beef up 增加；提高
    beef up 是「加強；增援；補充」的意思。這個成語的來源，是由於以前人將 beef 「牛肉」視為「力量；肌肉」，所以 beef up「牛肉增加」就有「加強；增援」的意思。
    The United States government decided to beef up security at its Liberian embassy.
    美國政府決定增加賴比瑞亞大使館的保全措施。
     
    ID 鑑定
    ID 是動詞 identify 的縮寫，表示「識別；鑑別」的意思。
    The police officer called for backup after he ID'd the criminal in the mall.
    這名警員在購物中心認出了罪犯，隨即請求支援。
     
    top 超過；高過
    top 在此當動詞，表示「勝過……；越過……」的意思。
    The swimmer topped his own world record.
    該游泳選手超越了他個人的世界記錄。
     
    pass away 逝世；去世
    pass away 是指「過世；辭世」的意思，也可以寫成 pass on 或 pass over ，都是「死；死亡」的較委婉說法。其中 pass on 和 pass over 是暗指「過渡、移動到另一個世界去」，也就是「逝世；去世」的意思。
    After the woman's husband passed away, she sold her house and moved into a one-bedroom apartment.

    force 迫使；強制
    force 是動詞，表示「強迫；逼迫；迫使」的意思。

    hit screens 上映
    hit screens 是口語的用法，表示「（電影、節目等）上映」的意思。另外，相關的用法還有，用 hit bookstores 來表示「新書上架」； hit the shelves 表示「新品上市」；以及 hit the charts 表示「新歌上榜」。
    The new movie by the popular director will hit screens at the end of October.
     那位當紅導演的新作將在十月底上映。
     
    wait in vain 枯等；乾等
    in vain 是副詞，「白費；徒勞無功」的意思，所以 wait in vain 就是指「白等；枯等」。和 in vain 相關的用法還有 take someone's name in vain，表示「說某人閒話」，源於聖經《出埃及記︰二十章 7 節》to take God's name in vain 「妄稱（耶和華）上帝的名」。

    oodles 許多；大量
    oodles 為名詞，表示「豐富；大量」的意思。特別值得注意的是，oodles 這個字為單複數同型，通常我們多使用複數型，而是否為單數則需視句子前後文而定。

    money laundering 洗錢
    launder 當動詞時，原來是指「洗滌；清洗」，而 money laundering 就如同其字面上的意思「清洗錢」，也就是指將非法所得的黑錢變成合法化，亦即俗稱的「洗錢」。

    街角這間小型網咖店捲入洗錢交易。
     
    over the top 誇張的；浮誇不實的
    over the top 字面上的意思是「超越頂端的」，被引申來指「太誇張的；不實際的；過於華麗而難以接受的」，通常用於較負面的形容。
    The Mardi Gras parade is well-known for its over-the-top costumes.
    西班牙的嘉年華會遊行以其誇張華麗的服裝聞名。
     
    succeed at doing something 成功做某事
    succeed 為不及物動詞，「成功；成就」的意思，注意後面介系詞要用 at 。也可以直接在 succeed at 後接名詞，表示「在某事上成功」。
    Analysts believe that the company will not succeed at maintaining its sales growth.
    分析師相信該公司不可能成功維持其業務成長。

    come up with 是指「提出（想法）；提供（意見、建議）」。另外，也可當成「發現；找到」的意思。

    have a whale of a time 擁有一段愉快的時光；玩得很快樂
    whale 在口語中的用法，有「巨大的（人、物等）」的意思，因此， have a whale of a time 字面上是「有很大一段時間」，引申為「玩得很愉快」的意思。值得注意的是，類似的用法還有 have a blast、have a great time 以及 have a ball 等。
    My kids had a whale of a time at the science museum last weekend.

    the other day 前幾天
    the other 在此是形容詞，表示「不久前的」，因此，the other day「不久前的日子」就是「前幾天」的意思。

    前幾天我去健行，在叢林裡看到這種令人驚奇的蜥蜴。
     
    get away from it all 逃離；遠離；避開（問題、工作、原來的居住環境等）
    get away from it all 是指「遠離工作；避開原來的居住環境；逃離問題」等的意思，離開（某事／物）的意願較強烈。
    One of the reasons I go fishing is to get away from it all.
    我去釣魚的其中一個原因就是想要遠離塵囂。
     
    be down/up 失敗／成功
    down 在本文中為口語用法，指的是「（網路連線）失敗；斷線」。相反的，若是「連上線；連線成功」，則用 Internet connection is up。
