Miers Nomination Draws Fire From Bush's Own

When it seemed like things could not get much worse for the presidency of George W. Bush, it appears the U.S. leader has managed to shoot himself in the political foot once again.
Bush's latest political appointment -- the naming of White House lawyer Harriet Miers to fill the post of retiring Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Conner -- has sparked a firestorm of criticism from within the president's own party.
Conservative Republicans, who formed the backbone of Bush's two election victories, say they now feel betrayed by the president's naming of a close friend and colleague to the nation's highest court.
Conservatives counted on Bush to select a jurist with an established record in support of key conservative issues.
Not only does Miers lack any experience as a judge, the appointment of a long-time friend and colleague smacks of cronyism to many observers.
"He has put up an unknown and undistinguished figure for an opening that conservatives worked for a generation to see filled with a jurist of high distinction," wrote Bill Kristol, editor of the conservative magazine The Weekly Standard.
The crisis comes on the heels of a disastrous response to Hurricane Katrina, rising fuel prices and mounting casualties in Iraq.
Add to this the host of legal troubles currently plaguing several key Republican leaders and sinking approval ratings for the commander-in-chief, and one could not find a worse time for stirring discontent within the ranks.
