Idioms
  • get/have (one's) day in court
Lisa got her day in court during the meeting when she talked and everyone listen.

    Dialogue 1
Iris and Jim are foreign students. They are talking about going to see a movie.
Iris: Let's see the new legal thriller that started playing.
Jim: Isn't that a movie about lawyers and juries? I don't know enough about the American legal system.
Iris: Don't worry. I'll help you. Let's start with the basics. In an American criminal court case, you have the judge and the jury.
Jim: Stop there. What is a jury?
Iris: A jury is a group of twelve people that are chosen to listen to the information in a court case and make a decision.
Jim: Who are the jury members? Is being a jury member a job?
Iris: No, jury members, or jurors, are people like you and me. You are required to do jury duty if you are an American. You can only get out of doing jury duty if you have a good excuse.
Jim: Um, I don't feel well and I don't want to watch the movie.
Iris: That's not a good enough excuse! We're still going to see the movie!
    Dialogue 2
Iris and Jim continue talking about the movie.
Jim: So, what are the two different groups called?
Iris: First, one group is the prosecution. They are the ones who have accused someone or some organization of doing something wrong.
Jim: And the other group?
Iris: Well, the other group is the defense. The defendant is the one accused of doing something wrong.
Jim: I think I'm catching on now. What about the judge?
Iris: The judge is the boss in the courtroom. He or she makes important decisions about the court case.
Jim: Oh, and what is that cool hammer that the judges get to hit on their desks when they want everyone to be quiet?
Iris: That is called a gavel.
Jim: Gavels are so cool. I want to get one so that I too can have the power to make everyone be quiet!
