Have you ever looked out at an ocean from a beach? Did it look big to you? Altogether, oceans cover an area of 362 million square kilometers. That's over seventy percent of the earth, and ten thousand times bigger than all of Taiwan.

The oceans are also very deep. The Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean is almost seven miles deep. In comparison, Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, is only five and a half miles high. All of Mount Everest could fit into the trench, with room to spare.

你曾經從海灘上向海洋一眼望去嗎？看起來是不是很廣大呢？海洋總共佔了三億六千二百萬平方公里的面積，超過地球面積的百分之七十，而且是整個台灣的一萬倍這麼大！

海洋也很深。位於太平洋的馬里亞納海溝幾乎有七英里深！比起來，世界最高峰聖母峰，高度也不過才五英里半。把整座聖母峰放進海溝裡還綽綽有餘。
