The statue of the Happy Prince stood in the middle of the city. Gold covered his body, and he had two bright jewels for eyes. Another jewel was on the handle of his sword. Everyone in the city loved the Happy Prince. |
One night a little bird flew into the city. He was on his way to a warm place to spend the winter. All of his friends had already left, and he was six weeks late. The bird decided to take a rest between the feet of the Happy Prince. Just as he was settling in, something strange happened. A drop of water landed on his head, and then another. The little bird looked up and saw that the Happy Prince was crying. |
"Who are you, and why are you crying?" asked the bird. |
"I am the Happy Prince. I lived a life of beauty and joy. When I died, they put me up here. Now all around me I see pain and ugly things." |
