In a faraway castle, Princess Eliza lived happily with her family. Sadly, her father the king married a wicked queen. The new queen sent Eliza from the castle and turned Eliza's eleven brothers into wild swans. |
Eliza searched and searched for her brothers. When she reached the sea, she saw eleven swans wearing gold crowns. The sun was setting, and as it fell below the horizon, the swans turned into her brothers. They were all very happy to see each other again. At dawn, her brothers turned back into swans and flew Eliza across the sea to their new home. |
That night, Eliza dreamed of an old woman who told her to sew coats of nettle for the swans. No matter how much pain it caused or how long it took, Eliza must not speak a word. Once she finished the coats, she could throw them on her brothers, and the spell would be broken. If she spoke, her brothers would die. |
"Their lives hang upon your tongue," said the old woman. "Remember all that I have told you." |
When Eliza awoke, she gathered nettle to make the coats. Although her hands burned and blistered, Eliza worked on without a sound. |
