One day, a king saw Eliza as she sewed her coats. He took pity on her and brought her to his castle. She could not say anything to stop him, or her brothers would die. Even though Eliza could not speak, the king soon fell in love with her and asked her to marry him. To please her, he brought the nettle and unfinished coats to the castle. Eliza smiled in happiness, and the king began to make plans for their wedding. |
Eliza ran out of nettle, so she snuck into a graveyard to gather more. One of the king's guards saw her and assumed Eliza was a witch. He ran to tell the king the horrible news. The king was heartbroken, and Eliza was sentenced to death. |
In jail, Eliza worked all night to finish the coats. When she was taken from her cell to be killed, her brothers flew around her. Eliza seized her chance and threw the coats over the swans' wings. |
"Now I may speak," Eliza exclaimed. "I am innocent!" |
The spell was broken! Eliza's brothers turned back into men and explained the whole story. The king begged Eliza for forgiveness, and they had the most beautiful wedding ever seen. |
