Once upon a time, there lived a young girl named Clara. It was Christmas Eve, and her parents were throwing a party complete with wonderful food and a fantastic Christmas tree. |
The party was in full swing when her godfather, Drosselmeyer the Toymaker, arrived. He wasn't just an ordinary toymaker, mind you; he was a magician toymaker, and all the children loved him. |
Drosselmeyer gave Clara's brother Fritz a fine gift. To Clara, he gave a marvelous nutcracker. It was shaped like a brave soldier and could crack nuts between its teeth. |
Upon seeing this beautiful gift, Fritz became jealous and broke it. When Clara began to cry, her godfather magically pulled a handkerchief from the air and used it to fix the broken toy. As you can imagine, this hushed Clara up right away, and she danced with happiness. |
After the party, the children were sent to bed, but Clara could not stay away from her present. She held the nutcracker in her arms and fell asleep beneath the Christmas tree. |
