  The Golden Goose (1)

Once upon a time, there was a young man named Dummling, who ventured into the forest to cut some wood. There, he came across a man dressed all in gray. "Please, sir, can you share some of your food with a hungry old man?" the man asked. "I don't have much food," Dummling replied apologetically, "but what I have I will share."
After eating, the gray man told Dummling to cut down a particular tree. Inside, Dummling found a goose with golden feathers calmly sitting on the roots.
Delighted, Dummling decided to spend the night at a nearby inn. The innkeeper's three daughters saw the golden goose and wanted one of its feathers. As soon as Dummling left the room, one daughter ran up to take a feather. The moment she touched the goose, however, she found that she could not let go. Her sisters tried to pull her away, but they too became stuck.
The next morning, Dummling carried the goose into town, and the innkeeper's daughters had no choice but to follow. Along the way, others tried to help the girls, but they in turn became stuck. Before long, there was a line of townspeople attached to the goose.
