Once upon a time, there was a little boy named Tyltyl and his sister, Mytyl. One evening, after their mother had put them to bed, they were startled by the appearance of an old woman. "I am Fairy Berylune, and I need your help," she said. "My daughter is very sick, and the only thing that will save her is the Blue Bird, the symbol of all happiness. I will give you a magic hat that will help you along your journey."
Tyltyl, a brave boy and the elder of the two children, put on the magic hat. "If you turn the hat's diamond," the fairy said, "you will bring out the souls of all around you." Tyltyl did so, and suddenly the room changed. The walls appeared to be made of sapphires, and everything sparkled. Where the old fairy had been, there stood a beautiful young woman with long golden hair. One by one, the souls of Bread, Milk, Light, Fire, Water, and even their dog and cat appeared and began to dance around the room and talk.
"These souls will help you on your dangerous journey," the fairy said, "and pure Light will guide you." Light stepped forward, took the hands of Tyltyl and Mytyl, and they set off on a grand adventure.
