Imagine a woman so frightening that if you looked at her, you would be turned to stone immediately. No, it's not your mother after she catches you trying to sneak in past midnight. Lucky for you, we are talking about Medusa, a monster from Greek mythology with long, sharp teeth and a head of snakes for hair. |
Medusa was not always the horrible monster we see in mythology books. In fact, she started out as a beautiful girl with two sisters, the Gorgons, and a boyfriend, Poseidon. One day, Medusa and Poseidon wanted to be alone to talk, so they entered a temple. The problem for Medusa was that this particular temple belonged to Athena, a powerful goddess. |
Looking down on the young couple in her temple, Athena was not very pleased. When Medusa compared her beauty to that of Athena, it was the last straw. Athena decided to punish Medusa for thinking she was as beautiful as a goddess. |
