Icarus and Daedalus (2) |
Daedalus and Icarus carefully climbed onto a windowsill. Spreading their homemade wings, they leapt into the air. Daedalus worried about his son, though, and tried to show him the correct way to fly. "Remember, you must follow me!" he called out one last time, looking back at Icarus. |
Icarus was having too much fun to heed his father's warnings. "Look at me!" Icarus shouted. "I can fly like an eagle! I can touch the Sun!" He soared higher and higher. Down on the ground, people spotted the pair and mistook them for gods traveling across the sky. |
Daedalus advised Icarus to fly at a more moderate height, but his son had already flown too high to hear his father. The sun warmed Icarus's face, but it also melted the wax that held his wings together. |
"Father, I'm falling. Save me!" he cried, but it was too late. Daedalus could only watch as his son fell into the dark sea and disappeared under the waves. Daedalus was heartbroken. Icarus had died because he did not listen to the wise words of his father. |
