In the late winter of 1801, Mr. Lockwood comes to the lonely moors of England to rent a manor called Thrushcross Grange. The landlord of the Grange is a strange, disrespectful old man named Heathcliff. While there, Mr. Lockwood gets sick and asks the housekeeper, Nelly, to tell him Heathcliff's story while he recovers. Nelly begins her tale with the moment she first met the boy Heathcliff at a manor called Wuthering Heights. |

One day, Mr. Earnshaw, the master of Wuthering Heights, brings home an orphan boy named Heathcliff. Mr. Earnshaw's children, Catherine and Hindley, detest the boy immediately. However, Catherine, who is wild at heart, begins to see something in Heathcliff. Eventually, the two develop a fast friendship that makes Hindley a jealous outsider. Even Mr. Earnshaw grows to love Heathcliff more than he loves Hindley. The violently jealous Hindley is sent away to boarding school to protect Heathcliff.

When Mr. Earnshaw dies three years later, Hindley returns with his wife, Frances. He takes over the manor and forces young Heathcliff to be a servant. |

Even so, Catherine and Heathcliff remain the closest of friends and walk the moors together. One day, they go to see Edgar and Isabella Linton, two children who live in a nearby manor, Thrushcross Grange. |
