A dog bites Catherine while she and Heathcliff are at Thrushcross Grange. Mr. and Mrs. Linton let her stay to recover. While there, she falls for Edgar, despite her deep love for Heathcliff. |

Hindley's wife dies giving birth to a son, Hareton. Hindley begins to drink too much and becomes more violent toward Heathcliff. When Catherine becomes engaged to Edgar, Heathcliff can no longer stand life at Wuthering Heights and leaves.

After Catherine and Edgar's marriage, Heathcliff returns, seeking revenge with the great wealth he has mysteriously found. He lends Hindley money, putting him into debt. Because of this, Heathcliff inherits Wuthering Heights when Hindley dies of alcoholism. |

Heathcliff then sets his sights on Thrushcross Grange and marries Isabella Linton. He is a cruel husband because he doesn't really love Isabella. Heathcliff confesses his true love for Catherine after she dies in childbirth, and Isabella runs away to London. There, she has a baby boy, whom she names Linton after her family. |

Edgar, devastated by his wife's death, names his baby Catherine after her mother. The young Catherine is raised with no knowledge of her mother's family or Wuthering Heights. |

When she is out walking one day, Catherine meets her cousin Hareton, whom Heathcliff has forced to be a servant. Young Catherine begins to visit Hareton at Wuthering Heights, unaware of her connection to the place. |
