When Isabella dies in London, a very sick Linton comes to live with his father, Heathcliff, at Wuthering Heights. Young Catherine and Linton begin a secret romance. |

The romance turns out to be false. Heathcliff has forced Linton into the relationship, hoping he'll marry young Catherine. Heathcliff wants to get access to Thrushcross Grange through the marriage as his final revenge on the ailing Edgar Linton. When Linton is near death, Heathcliff holds Catherine prisoner until she agrees to marry Linton. After the marriage, both Edgar and Linton die, and Heathcliff inherits the Grange. He then forces Catherine to be his servant at Wuthering Heights and rents out Thrushcross Grange to Mr. Lockwood.

When Nelly finishes telling Heathcliff's story, Mr. Lockwood is shocked and immediately leaves the Grange. He returns six months later to visit Nelly and hear news of Wuthering Heights. He learns that Heathcliff became so obsessed with the older Catherine's ghost that he lost his mind. He died after spending a night walking on the moors. Hareton and young Catherine inherited Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. They fell in love and planned to be married on New Year's Day. |
