  Pride and Prejudice (1)

A wealthy young gentleman named Charles Bingley has rented the nearby estate of Netherfield Park. Upon hearing this news, the Bennet household feels great excitement, for the Bennets have five daughters: Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia. It is Mrs. Bennet's hope to see them all married.
The Bennets are invited to attend a ball, and Mr. Bingley is there as well. Attracted to Jane, he spends a lot of time dancing with her. With Mr. Bingley is his close friend Mr. Darcy, who feels the local people are too low in social status. Darcy's pride keeps him from dancing with Elizabeth, causing people to think of him as arrogant and rude.

However, at different occasions over the following weeks, Elizabeth's wit and charm begin to interest Mr. Darcy. Yet Elizabeth's prejudice toward him keeps her from opening up to him. Meanwhile, Jane's friendship with Mr. Bingley continues to blossom, and she goes to the Bingley mansion to see him. However, she gets soaked in the rain on the way there and becomes ill. Because of this, she has to stay at Netherfield for several days to get well. Elizabeth goes to Netherfield to care for her sister. There, she again meets Mr. Darcy, who is impressed with Elizabeth's caring nature, her intelligence, and how well she argues with him.
