When winter arrives, Jane is upset when Bingley and Darcy go back to London. Then more unpleasant news comes their way when they learn Elizabeth's best friend, Charlotte Lucas, will marry Mr. Collins. He had once proposed to Elizabeth, but she refused him. Charlotte is marrying him for financial reasons, yet Elizabeth and Jane want more than just security from a marriage. Hoping to see Bingley, Jane visits London, but luck isn't with her. The possibilities for marriage are not looking good for the Bennet girls.

While Elizabeth and Charlotte visit with Lady Catherine one day, Darcy shows up. Knowing Elizabeth is staying at the Collins's home, he starts visiting them frequently. Very unexpectedly, Darcy proposes marriage to Elizabeth. She quickly rejects his proposal, saying he's too proud and offensive. She then scolds him for what he did to Wickham and for advising Bingley to stop pursuing Jane. |
