  In the morning, Polyphemus pushed the boulder aside to let out his sheep, but he stood in front of the entrance, hoping to catch the men. To escape, Odysseus and his crew tied themselves to the bottom of the sheep, which carried them past the blinded Cyclops and back to their boats.  
  Unfortunately for Odysseus and his crew, Polyphemus was the son of Poseidon, the powerful god of the sea. Poseidon cursed Odysseus and promised that he would spend years at sea and lose all of his crew before returning home.
  
  On another island, they encountered the sorceress Circe. She decided to help Odysseus, and she told him how to prepare for the dangers ahead.  
  Odysseus pressed on. Once, his ship came upon the Sirens, who attracted men with their beautiful songs and then killed them. Warned by Circe, Odysseus protected his crew members by putting wax in their ears. He wanted to hear the songs, though, so he had his men tie him to the ship's mast. Odysseus became one of the few people to hear the Sirens' songs and live to tell the tale.  
  Then they had to pass between the twin terrors of Scylla and Charybdis. Scylla was a six-headed monster that ate men from passing ships. Charybdis was able to create a whirlpool that could sink a ship. Again following Circe's advice, Odysseus sailed near Scylla, losing six men but preserving his ship.  
     
  到了早上，波力緋目把大圓石推到一旁，好讓他的羊群出去，但他站在洞口前面，希望逮到那些人。為了逃出去，奧德賽斯和手下把自己綁在羊的肚子下面，羊群帶著他們經過眼盲的獨眼巨人身邊，回到了船上。  
     
  奧德賽斯和他的手下運氣不好，波力緋目是波塞頓的兒子，而波塞頓正是威力無窮的海神。波塞頓詛咒奧德賽斯，發誓一定會讓奧德賽斯在海上漂泊數年並且失去所有的手下後，才能回到故鄉。
  
     
  在另一座島上，他們遇到了女巫色曦。她決定幫助奧德賽斯並告訴他如何防備之後的危險。  
     
  奧德賽斯繼續往前進。有一次，他的船遇到了色鵀女海妖，這些女海妖會用美妙的歌聲吸引人，再把他們殺死。藉著色曦的提醒，奧德賽斯把蠟塊塞在手下的耳朵裡來保護他們。不過，他自己卻想聽一聽這種歌聲，於是他要手下把他綁在船桅上。奧德賽斯成為少數聽過色鵀女海妖的歌聲，卻能活著回來講述故事的人。  
     
  接著他們必須通過西拉和卡力布得斯這個雙難關。西拉是個會把經過船隻上的人吃掉的六頭怪物，卡力布得斯可以引發足以讓船隻沈沒的漩渦。奧德賽斯再次按照色曦的建議，將船駛近西拉，犧牲了六個人但保全了他的船。
