It's the day of the annual church picnic. After the meal, the children head off to explore an old cave. Tom and his sweetheart, Becky, take a wrong turn and get lost in one of the dark tunnels. The townsfolk search for them for three days and begin to lose heart. |
|

Meanwhile, Tom keeps Becky's spirits up as they wander through the cave, looking for a way out. They come upon Injun Joe looking for a place to bury his treasure. Luckily, he doesn't see them.
|

Tom finally sees a beam of daylight poking into the darkness of the cave and follows it to freedom. Family and friends rejoice at the children's safe return, and the entrance to the cave is sealed to prevent further tragedy. |
|

When Tom gathers the strength to talk, he reveals that Injun Joe is in the cave. The news spreads, and a dozen men gather at the sealed cave door. When it is opened, they find Injun Joe's body. He had died trying to escape. |
|

Tom and Huck crawl back into the cave to recover the gold that Injun Joe had buried. Twelve thousand dollars is enough to change their lives forever. That summer was full of more adventures than even the "treacherous pirates" could have imagined. |
