The friends tell Oz that the Wicked Witch is gone, but Oz still refuses to grant their wishes. The Lion roars in anger, causing Toto to jump and tip over a screen. Hiding behind the screen is Oz. He is just a regular man! He confesses that, long ago, his hot-air balloon was caught in a storm. When he landed in Oz, the people made him their ruler.
He finally gives the Scarecrow a brain, the Lion courage, and the Woodman a heart. To Dorothy, he offers a ride home in his hot-air balloon. When it is ready to launch, Toto runs after a kitten and Dorothy chases after him. The balloon ropes break, and Oz floats away without them.

With the wizard gone, Glinda the Good Witch of the South may be Dorothy's only hope. Once again, the friends take a journey and overcome many obstacles. When they finally reach Glinda's palace, Glinda tells Dorothy that the silver shoes have the power to take her home. Dorothy tearfully says good-bye to her friends and then clicks her heels together, saying, "Take me home to Aunt Em!"
Dorothy goes home at last. There, she runs into her aunt's arms. Aunt Em cries, "Where in the world did you come from?"
"From the Land of Oz," Dorothy replies. "I'm so glad to be at home again!"
