一九四○年代警界開始使用無線電對話的時候，因為收訊並不穩定，對話常會因為過長而沒辦法清楚聽到訊息，所以伊利諾州的通訊總監 Charles Hopper 發明了一系列簡短的十位密碼（ten-codes）來解決這個問題。除了 10-4 指「收到；了解」之外，還有 10-9 ，意思就是「重複你說的話」。另外，從 10-20 衍生而來的 what's your twenty 指的就是「你現在位置在哪？」雖然這些術語目前比較少人使用，但在一九七○年代可是紅遍美國的喔！

  字首 mis- 表示「不好；錯誤；缺乏」等否定、背離、不適宜的意思。少數表否定意思的動詞前面再加上 mis-，主要是用來加強語氣，表示懷疑的態度。如：misdoubt（懷疑；擔心）。
