在美國，一踏進急診室通常得先經過好幾道手續才能獲得治療。首先得找到掛號櫃台（registration desk）、填好表格後完成掛號、取得號碼牌等候叫號，叫到號碼時會有護士先替你做傷病分類（triage），之後才是等著看醫生。而見到醫生時可能還要先做一些檢查，像是 X 光檢測（X-ray）、超音波（ultrasound）、電腦斷層掃描（CAT scan）、驗血（blood test）、驗尿（urine test），甚至還要作核磁共振（MRI）。

騎馬的人想讓馬停下來的時候，通常會緊拉韁繩，所以 hold your horses 就引申有希望別人「慢下來、有耐心點」的意思。

  以前的人在打架之前的準備動作就是把襯衫脫掉，以免弄皺了昂貴的襯衫。所以 keep your shirt on 原本的含意是「把襯衫穿著；別脫下來打架」，引申有「冷靜、別衝動」之意。
