  cross my heart 源於天主教的儀式，教徒們通常以十字架起誓。現在這句話較常用於小孩子之間，他們邊說邊在自己的胸前畫個十字架，然後舉起右手對天發誓，以表示自己說的話並無虛假。起誓對外國人來說是很慎重的事情，所以如果不能擔保所說的事情一定能辦到的話，還是別說為妙。

  字首 syn- 之後接 b、m、p 時，syn- 會變形為 sym-；之後接「子音 s + 字音」或子音 z 時，syn- 變形為 sy-，如：system 和 syzygy（朔望；拉丁文古詩的二韻腳）；之後接l時變形為 syl-，如：syllabus（摘要；進度表）。不過，sy-、syl- 的情況較為少見，主要以 sym- 和 syn- 為主。
