  用於詢問如果選擇某事而不是另一件事會如何。What if . . . 常用於提出建議或詢問對方若某事發生的話會如何。
   
What if I took the wrong job instead of the right one?
  要是我選了錯的工作沒選到對的會怎樣？
   
What if you took less benefits instead of more pay?
  如果你薪水沒有增加，福利反而變少，會怎麼樣？
   
What if he took a job in the suburbs instead of in the city?
  如果他選了在郊區的工作而不是在城裡會怎麼樣？
   
What if Cindy takes the marketing position instead of the sales position?
  如果欣蒂選擇行銷的職務，而不是選業務的話，會怎麼樣？

What if we took the blue line instead of the red line?
  如果我們搭藍線而不是搭紅線的話，會怎麼樣？

  提供對方其他選擇時，除了 instead of 也可用 rather 表示：
• Rather than starting a new book, why don't you finish the one you're reading now?
與其重新看一本新書，你何不把現在正在看的那本看完呢？
• I'd rather order delivery since it's too hot outside to go to the restaurant.
因為現在出去到餐廳吃飯天氣太熱了，我寧願叫外送。

換個角度說明，以讓對方更能清楚知道事情原委時，就可用這句話表示。通常之後會伴隨說話者的想法。
   
Let me put it this way: if you don't do your work, you won't get paid.
  我這麼說吧，不工作就沒錢拿。
   
A: Why do we have to do all this work?
  為什麼我們要做這些工作？
   
B: Let me put it this way: it's my way or the highway. Like it or leave it.
  我這麼說吧，不照我說的就滾。要不要做隨你。

  想說服別人的時候，還可以用 think of it this way，請人換另外一個角度來看事情。

  -aholic 或 -oholic、-holic 源自於 alcoholic（酗酒者），後來接於其他事物或活動之後，用來表示沈迷此事物到不可自拔的人。

  chocoholic　n.　嗜吃巧克力的人（也可拼作 chocaholic）

If I won the lottery, I would become a shopaholic.

  sugarholic　 n.　嗜吃糖的人
Hillary was once a sugarholic, drinking soda and eating candy all day long.
  希拉蕊曾經很愛吃糖，整天喝汽水和吃糖果。
   
  workaholic　 n.　工作狂
People become workaholics to avoid dealing with their personal lives.
  人們變成工作狂以避免處理個人生活上的問題。
