  用於詢問如果選擇某事而不是另一件事會如何。What if . . . 常用於提出建議或詢問對方若某事發生的話會如何。

  如果你薪水沒有增加,福利反而變少,會怎麼樣?

  提供對方其他選擇時,除了 instead of 也可用 rather 表示:

• I'd rather order delivery since it's too hot outside to go to the restaurant.

換個角度說明,以讓對方更能清楚知道事情原委時,就可用這句話表示。通常之後會伴隨說話者的想法。

  我這麼說吧,不工作就沒錢拿。
   
A: Why do we have to do all this work?
  為什麼我們要做這些工作?
   
B: Let me put it this way: it's my way or the highway. Like it or leave it.
  我這麼說吧,不照我說的就滾。要不要做隨你。

  想說服別人的時候,還可以用 think of it this way,請人換另外一個角度來看事情。
