  欲用計量方式來描述事情的程度，即可用此句型表示。
   
On a scale of one to ten, how bad does it hurt?
  如果程度是從一到十的話，疼痛有多嚴重？
   
On a scale of one to ten, how much has your pain decreased?
  如果程度是從一到十的話，你的疼痛減輕多少？
   
I'd say my health has improved to an eight, on a scale of one to ten.
  如果程度是從一到十的話，我想我的健康狀況已經改善到八。
   
On a scale of one to ten, the doctor's care was a ten.
  如果分數是從一到十的話，這個醫生的醫療品質有十分。

如果你不知道怎麼告訴醫護人員疼痛的程度怎麼辦？別擔心，通常他們會有個疼痛計量表，上面有一到十的數字，病人只要依據疼痛程度指出對照的數字就可以了。數字一或二表示疼痛不是很強烈；三或四表示能感覺疼痛，但還能正常活動；五是指從事正常活動會有困難；到了八就表示幾乎無法活動；而十就表示「痛死我了！乾脆立即斃了我吧！」

這句話雖不合文法，但口語中常聽到，用於告訴對方無法做到他的要求。
   
A: Can you come over on Friday?
  星期五你可以過來嗎？
   
B: No can do. I've got plans.
  沒辦法。我有事。
   
A: Could you take this to Mandy for me?
  你可以幫我把這個拿給曼蒂嗎？
   
B: No can do. I'm headed in the other direction.
  不行。我要走另一個方向。
   
  ★你知道嗎？．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．
  no can do 這個不符合英文文法的口語，其實是將中文的「不能做」直譯為英文。以上這些都是直接了當拒絕別人的說法，絲毫沒有談判的空間。
   
  ★你還可以這麼說．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．．
Can't do it.
  不行。
   
I can't do it.
  我做不到。
   
It can't be done.
  做不到。
   
Impossible.
  不可能。
   
Not possible.
  不可能。
   
A: Can you finish this report by six?
  你可以在六點之前把這份報告完成嗎？
   
B: Not possible. I still have ten pages of data to cross-check.

  cit 或可拼成 cite， 表示「召喚；激起；喚醒；激勵」等，像 excite（使興奮；刺激）、incite（煽動）都帶有「激發」的意思。到了十六世紀，cite 才出現「引用；引述；列舉」的意思。

  resuscitate　 v.　使復活；使復甦
Emergency workers resuscitated the man at the scene and brought him to the hospital.
  急救人員把那名男子當場救活，然後把他送到醫院。
   
  solicit　 v　請求；懇求；徵求；徵募；招徠
The school solicits contributions from all alumni.
  學校向所有校友募款。
