  在美國薪資（salary）是以年薪計算，通常每月或雙週給付一次，也有以時薪計算（by the hour）的工作，以兼職（part-time）或半天（half-time）性質的工作居多。另外，還有些工作收入是按佣金計算（by/on commission），這類工作除了底薪（base salary）外，會再加上紅利所得。

close call 源自於球類運動的術語，指某個運動場上的動作難以立刻裁決，而裁判的宣判（call）可能對己方有利，也可能不利，就會說 it's a close call。此外 close shave 也是差異極小的意思，就如同刮鬍子的時候，要刮得非常乾淨或可能刮傷皮膚全在於力道的拿捏。
